Brazil electoral poll oversight sparks calls for investigation

Discrepancies among opinion polls in Brazil’s Goiás state have prompted officials to demand scrutiny of polling firms. Experts urged the Electoral Public Ministry, the Federal Police and the Regional Electoral Court to verify the data, citing concerns that some surveys may be manipulated to affect the gubernatorial race, where incumbent Daniel Vilela (MDB) leads.

At the national level, Supreme Court justice Kassio Nunes Marques, also head of the Electoral Court, suspended an AtlasIntel poll that showed a decline for Flávio Bolsonaro and proposed a “seal of electoral accuracy” to reward surveys that closely match election outcomes. Critics warn that such certification could increase judicial interference in the polling process and incentivise firms to alter methodologies merely to obtain the seal.

The poll market in Brazil includes around twenty companies conducting presidential intent surveys and up to thirty‑five covering state contests, all competing for clients and media partnerships. The ongoing debate highlights broader doubts about poll reliability and the potential impact on upcoming elections.
