Brazil election deadline for transit voting set for August 20

The deadline for Brazilian voters to request 'voto em trânsito' (transit voting) for the 2026 general elections is August 20. This modality allows voters to cast their ballots in a different city on election day without needing to justify their absence from their home district.

Requests can be submitted online through the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) portal via the 'Autoatendimento Eleitoral' service or in person at any electoral registry office. For online applications, voters must have their biometrics registered with the Electoral Justice.

Transit voting is restricted to state capitals and municipalities with more than 100,000 voters. The scope of voting depends on the location: voters choosing a city within the same state as their electoral domicile can vote for all offices, including governor, senator, and federal and state deputies. Those voting in a different state may only vote for the presidency.

Additionally, Brazilians registered to vote abroad who are in Brazil during the elections may request transit voting, but only for the presidential race. The first round of elections is scheduled for October 4, 2026, with a potential second round on October 25.
