Shimano Fest and electric bike growth highlight Brazil's mobility shift

Brazil is experiencing a significant shift in urban mobility, marked by the rapid growth of electric bicycles and the hosting of major industry events. The number of electric bicycles, self-propelled vehicles, and mopeds in circulation has increased 37-fold since 2016, reaching 284,000 in 2024. This surge presents both opportunities for short-distance commuting and challenges regarding safety, infrastructure, and regulation by the National Transit Council (Contran).

In São Paulo, the Shimano Fest 2026 is hosting the 1st Symposium of Active Mobility, Sport, Cycle Tourism, and Entrepreneurship. The event brings together specialists, athletes, and public officials to discuss the future of the bicycle sector, including urban planning, electric mobility, and sustainability.

Additionally, community initiatives like Sesc Pinheiros’ 12th Night Ride are promoting active mobility through collective cycling experiences in the city. While these events encourage the use of bicycles for leisure and health, the rapid integration of new electric modes into the urban fabric continues to spark debates on how to safely organize their use alongside traditional traffic.
