Brazil electric vehicle charging infrastructure faces cable theft risks

The expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Brazil is facing new security challenges due to an increase in cable theft, vandalism, and fraud. Criminals are targeting charging station cables because of their copper content, which can be illegally resold in the scrap market.

These thefts cause financial losses through equipment replacement and create service unavailability, which can disrupt operations and negatively impact the user experience. Thiago Castilha, managing director of E-Wolf, suggests that security must be integrated into the project planning phase. He recommends treating charging infrastructure as a public asset and implementing measures such as controlled cable storage or adopting fixed-cable models to reduce vulnerability.
