Criminals frequently target electrical cables and towers for their high resale value in the illegal market, often burning or shredding materials to hide their origin. These thefts cause significant service interruptions for internet, cable TV, and electricity providers.

In the Tatuapé district, specifically Vila Gomes Cardim and Chácara Santo Antônio, early morning thefts have disrupted utility services. In Santarém, thieves have targeted electrical installations and cultural sites, such as the Casa da Memória. The expansion of e-mobility has introduced new vulnerabilities; industry experts, including Thiago Castilha of E-Wolf, suggest that security measures like controlled cable storage or fixed-cable models must be integrated into the planning phase of EV charging projects to mitigate financial losses and service unavailability.

Law enforcement has intensified operations to combat these crimes. In the Greater São Paulo area, police seized half a ton of copper in Mairiporã. In Porto Alegre, cable theft affects 29 of the city’s 94 neighborhoods, impacting thousands of retailers. Recent operations have also targeted renewable energy infrastructure, with arrests made following thefts at solar power plants in Mato Grosso and Divinópolis, where two tons of copper wire were recovered. Other significant incidents include the theft of over two kilometers of cable in Arroio do Sal, leaving 1,000 homes without power, and the seizure of 200 kilograms of wire in Rio de Janeiro during raids on irregular scrap yards.
