Brazil unemployment rate falls to 5.4% in second quarter of 2026
Brazil's national unemployment rate fell to 5.4% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 6.1% in the first quarter, according to IBGE data. This represents the lowest level for this period since 2012. Regional disparities remain significant: Santa Catarina recorded the lowest rate at 2.1%, while Amapá saw the highest at 9.8%.
Despite the drop in unemployment, real average income has remained stagnant at R$ 3,795. While the labor market is expanding, analysts note that the growth is driven more by the volume of people employed rather than individual wage increases.
Data from the Ministry of Labor and Employment shows a narrowing gender gap in formal employment. Between January 2023 and June 2026, 10.1 million new formal jobs were created, with women occupying 5.8 million of those positions. Additionally, FGV IBRE reports that 59.3% of workers feel secure about their income for the next six months, marking a historic high in job security perception.
