Brazil labor market improvements 2026
Entities: Brazil · Novo Caged · Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) · Novo Cadastro Geral de Empregados e Desempregados (Novo Caged) · Santa Catarina
Overview
In late July 2026 Brazil’s labour market continued to show strength. The Novo Caged report confirmed the June addition of 145,161 formal jobs, bringing the first‑half total to 921,645 and 963,921 over the past year. Gains were led by services, with São Paulo state adding the most jobs (34,981), followed by Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Regional data from Marília showed a modest net rise despite a June contraction.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reiterated that the unemployment rate fell to 5.4 % in the second quarter, the lowest level since the series began in 2012 and down from 6.1 % in Q1. Employment reached 103.1 million, while the unemployed count dropped by roughly 718 000. The biggest sectoral gains were in transport, storage, postal services and public administration, education, health and social services. Informality remained at 37.4 % and average monthly earnings hit a record R$ 3,738. Together, the Caged and IBGE releases underscore a sustained expansion of formal employment and a historic low in unemployment in Brazil during mid‑2026.
