Brazil enhances disaster monitoring in Piraí do Sul and Porto Velho

Municipal authorities in Brazil are enhancing meteorological and river monitoring to mitigate climate-related risks. In Piraí do Sul, the Municipal Civil Defense has installed two new automatic rain gauges provided by the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (CEMADEN). These devices, located in urban areas, aim to improve the tracking of rainfall volumes to prevent flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

In Porto Velho, the Municipal Superintendency of Protection and Civil Defense has intensified monitoring of the Rio Madeira as its level reaches 4.20 meters. Authorities are tracking both the water level and flow rate to anticipate impacts on communities in the Baixo Madeira region. The municipality will enter a state of attention if the river falls below 4 meters and a state of alert if it reaches 3 meters.
