Brazil ethanol producers granted R$ 750 million in tax credit relief

Ethanol producers and cooperatives in Brazil have until October 4 to request authorization from the Receita Federal to utilize accumulated PIS and Cofins tax credits to pay other federal taxes. The benefit, capped at R$ 750 million for 2026, is governed by Normative Instruction No. 2.344/2026.

These credits can be applied toward taxes administered by the Receita Federal, including the Contribution on Goods and Services (CBS) established by the tax reform. The measure allows companies to use existing recognized credits to reduce immediate tax expenses, potentially improving cash flow for operational costs such as purchasing sugarcane and corn, unit maintenance, and supplier payments.

While the measure aims to ease the financial pressure on industrial plants, it does not represent new government funding, but rather the utilization of existing credits. For rural producers, improved industry liquidity may enhance the ability of mills to fulfill contracts and purchase raw materials, though market prices for crops will continue to be determined by regional supply and demand.
