Brazil Expands Animal Castration Programs at Federal and Municipal Levels

A federal health commission in Brazil approved a proposal establishing the National Vida Animal Program, which aims to protect, manage, and control the populations of dogs and cats, including stray animals. The program includes free or subsidized campaigns for spaying, vaccination, and identification, and integrates with the National Registry of Domestic Animals to improve planning and monitoring.

In Feira de Santana, Bahia, city councilor Pedro Américo (Cidadania) recommended that the mayor broaden local animal spaying campaigns across neighborhoods and districts, targeting stray dogs and cats to improve public health and reduce zoonotic disease risks. Both initiatives stress preventive animal welfare policies to lessen abandonment, mistreatment, and the burden on public health services.
