Brazil expands biomethane production from agricultural waste

Brazil is expanding its renewable energy sector through the production of biomethane, derived from organic waste such as sugarcane and ethanol residues. According to the Brazilian Association of Biogas and Biomethane (ABiogás), the country has the potential to produce 120 million cubic meters of biomethane per day. Currently, 21 plants are authorized to operate in Brazil, with an additional 47 undergoing the authorization process with the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

Beyond industrial fuel, hybrid systems integrating biodigesters with other renewable sources, such as solar panels, are gaining traction. These systems offer a solution for providing continuous electricity to remote and isolated regions, including the Legal Amazon, reducing reliance on diesel. The Ministry of Mines and Energy has noted that the availability of biomass from agricultural and agro-industrial sectors allows for decentralized energy production near consumption points. To support energy access, the Ministry has approved a R$ 6 billion budget for 2026 for the 'Luz para Todos' program, which includes provisions for biomass and hybrid systems.
