Brazil expands BrazilMAIS satellite monitoring as Brasília records lowest homicide rate

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security showcased the BrazilMAIS program at the National Users Meeting of the MAI network, highlighting that since 2020 the National Public Security Fund has invested more than R$ 323 million. The platform now monitors over 8.5 million km² daily, serves more than 710 public institutions, and has registered over 130 000 users. It provides daily high‑resolution imagery from a constellation of more than 130 satellites, automated change‑detection alerts and geospatial analysis tools that support police operations, environmental enforcement and forensic activities, making it the world’s largest satellite‑based public‑security monitoring system.

Separately, Ministry data confirmed that Brasília remains the safest capital in Brazil, with a projected homicide rate of 5.53 per 100 000 inhabitants over January‑May 2026 (69 homicides). The capital also posted the lowest aggregated lethal‑crime index nationwide. Officials attributed the results to integrated security forces, continued investment, technology use and community participation, noting that ten administrative regions have gone over a year without a homicide, covering about 471 000 people, and fourteen regions in 2026 cover roughly 627 000 residents.
