Brazil expands Desenrola program, renegotiates billions in debt
The Brazilian government’s Desenrola program, aimed at regularising debts of families, students, small businesses and family farmers, has entered a new phase. Banco do Brasil has widened its role, offering discounts of up to 80% on high‑risk credit operations and up to 70% on debts registered with the Union’s Active Debt system, as well as extended repayment terms for eligible producers. The latest stage, open until 20 December 2026, enables renegotiation of debts up to R$ 20 000 and provides new rural credit lines through Pronaf.
Since its launch, Desenrola has renegotiated more than R$ 23 billion for over 500 000 family farmers and, according to a recent report, has now renegotiated almost R$ 12 billion in total across the country, benefitting over one million Brazilians through more than 1.1 million operations. The program also includes Desenrola Fies, which reduced the outstanding value of over 34 000 student loan contracts from R$ 2.04 billion to about R$ 410 million, with an average discount close to 80%. The initiative is intended to lower default rates, restore credit access and stimulate economic activity.
