Brazil expands electronic tolling and free-flow systems

Brazil is increasingly adopting electronic and free-flow tolling systems to improve road infrastructure management and traffic efficiency. Free-flow technology, which uses gantries instead of physical toll plazas, is expected to be implemented on 3% of the country's conceded highways by 2027, according to data from ANTT and ABCR.

While these electronic systems—often utilizing vehicle tags for automatic payment—offer increased speed and convenience for drivers, they introduce significant cybersecurity risks. The data collected by tolling gantries, including vehicle location, timing, and routes, provides a real-time map of national logistics. This information can become a target for physical crime; the 2025 Global Cargo Theft Report indicates that 22% of global cargo thefts are facilitated by information leaks or internal involvement, highlighting the link between digital vulnerabilities and physical security threats.
