Brazil expands flu vaccination for infants in Paraíba while sleep‑related breathing problems impact workers' health

Respiratory obstructions during sleep, such as deviated septum or enlarged nasal turbinates, can lead to chronic fatigue, reduced concentration and lower workplace performance. ENT specialist Gustavo Jorge warned that "when a persistent obstruction exists, the patient may sleep poorly for years without realizing the impact on physical and mental stamina." Data from Brazil's INSS show a sharp rise in temporary disability benefits for occupational exhaustion, from 823 in 2021 to 7,595 in the previous year.

In the state of Paraíba, the health secretariat announced the expansion of influenza vaccination to children as young as six months across all 223 municipalities. The move aims to curb influenza spread during peak viral circulation and protect high‑risk groups, while still prioritising the elderly, pregnant women and older children. To date, more than 1.3 million doses have been distributed, with roughly 765 000 administered to priority groups, achieving a 49 % coverage rate, below the national target of 90 %.
