Brazil expands forest fire prevention with gear distribution and education blitz

The Guandu Committee in Rio de Janeiro’s Region Hydrographical II delivered 1,953 personal protective items—including 959 balaclavas and 994 respirators—to municipalities such as Japeri, Mendes, Nova Iguaçu, Paracambi, Vassouras, Queimados and Miguel Pereira, as well as to ICMBio, the Guandu Environmental Protection Area and the Area III South Fire Brigade. The distribution follows an earlier program launched in April that allocated millions of reais for fire‑fighting equipment, training and prevention planning across the region.

In the Federal District, Brazlândia hosted its seventh educational “Blitz” on forest‑fire prevention, with police road units, environmental agencies and the fire brigade informing drivers about the dangers of burning waste. The event, held on DF‑080 from 8 a.m. to noon, involved 26 fifth‑grade students and aimed to reinforce the district’s fire‑prevention plan.

Both initiatives are part of Brazil’s broader effort to reduce forest‑fire risk during the dry season through equipment provision, public awareness and coordinated agency action.
