Brazil expands Free Flow toll system and automatic payment tags

The expansion of the Free Flow system in Brazil is expected to increase the use of automatic payment tags on highways. This model replaces traditional toll booths with gantries equipped with cameras and sensors. The technology is already active on more than 19 highways and is planned for major corridors, including the Anchieta-Imigrantes system, with the Castello Branco and Raposo Tavares highways scheduled for implementation in 2027.

Vehicles are identified via a tag or license plate reading. For tag users, fees are debited automatically. Drivers without a tag must manually check and pay via digital channels within a specific timeframe, which can be up to 30 days. Failure to pay can result in a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver's license.

According to the Brazilian Association of Automatic Payment Companies for Mobility (Abepam), there are approximately 12 million electronic tags in operation in Brazil. All federal highway concessionaires associated with the Brazilian Association of Highway Concessionaires (ABCR) accept this system. The technology aims to reduce congestion, improve travel fluidity, and provide better expense tracking for both individual drivers and transport companies.
