Brazil ANP updates biomethane commercialization rules

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) has updated regulations for the commercialization of biomethane in Brazil through Resolution No. 1.006/2026. The new rules establish quality, transport, and commercialization standards for the renewable fuel, which is produced from organic waste, for use in vehicular, residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

A key change in the regulation is the permission to mix biomethane with natural gas, allowing it to be injected into existing transport and distribution networks, provided the final product meets specific quality standards. The ANP has also increased quality control requirements, mandating periodic physicochemical analyses and the issuance of compliance certificates. Producers must monitor parameters such as methane content, carbon dioxide, oxygen, sulfur, and moisture.

For biomethane derived from landfills and sewage treatment plants, additional safety rules regarding contaminants like heavy metals and microorganisms have been implemented. The industry is seeing rapid growth; according to ABiogás, national production increased by 75% in 2025. Experts at the 13th Biogas Forum highlighted the strategic role of biomethane in energy security and decarbonization, though some industry leaders noted that the potential for using digestate as fertilizer remains underutilized in current national policies.
