Brazil expands solar power and battery storage for agriculture

Cemig announced the Cemig Agro Solar 24h programme, offering up to R$ 50 million to fund solar‑plus‑battery projects on farms in Minas Gerais. Proposals from specialised firms, ESCOs and cooperatives can be submitted until 26 June 2026, with selection expected by 31 August 2026. The scheme promises at least a 60 % discount on photovoltaic and storage systems to improve energy security for irrigation, dairy, poultry, pork and agro‑industrial operations.

Separately, the Acciona foundation installed a 41‑panel photovoltaic system for the Coopjuqui rural cooperative in the Vale do Ribeira, São Paulo. The installation will generate about 35 MWh annually, covering most of the cooperative’s electricity needs, cutting bills and avoiding roughly 13.5 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The project is expected to benefit around 60 farming families involved in vegetables, honey, mushrooms and bananas, supporting modern, eco‑friendly agricultural practices.
