Brazil expands renewables, EV production, and grid upgrades

Entities: Brazil · Marisete Dadald Pereira · Associação Brasileira das Empresas Geradoras de Energia Elétrica (Abrage)

Overview

Brazil’s clean‑energy transition continues on multiple fronts. After ANEEL’s June 2026 rulemaking on battery storage, a BESS auction is slated for December to firm wind‑solar output. Solar capacity now exceeds 70 GW, placing Brazil fifth worldwide, driven by distributed projects and programmes such as Luz do Povo that supply free electricity to low‑income households. Grid upgrades include Cemig’s new 50 MVA substation in Divinópolis, a solar‑subscription deal for six public‑building complexes saving about R$ 34 million annually, and Equatorial Goiás’s R$ 7.1 bn investment adding the Savana sub‑station, three new feeders and reinforced distribution lines. The utility warned that the advancing dry season raises wildfire risk to the grid, citing 384 fire incidents in 2025 that affected roughly 59 700 customers; new line works in Itaberaí aim to serve about 50 000 residents and improve voltage stability.

Automakers are scaling EV output. GM lifted its Brazil investment to R$ 10.5 bn through 2028 for factory upgrades and mild‑hybrid models. MG Motor announced a R$ 400 m plant in Ceará for MG4 hatchbacks and MG S5 SUVs, targeting 50 000 units and 600 jobs. Chinese GWM is building a megafactory in Aracruz, initially 100 000 units and expanding to 200 000, creating roughly 10 000 jobs and serving as an export hub. GWM unveiled sport‑focused GT and Sport trims for its Ora 5 in China and launched a hybrid Ora 5 in Europe, highlighting a model that will share components with the forthcoming Brazilian production and a fully electric version expected in early 2027.

Brazil is also preparing large‑scale reversible pumped‑hydro storage. Law No 15.269/2025 and CNPE resolutions 7 and 8 of 2026 create a framework for the first auctions, anticipated in 2027, to store surplus renewable power, boost grid stability and generate jobs.
