Brazil expands specialized ophthalmological services in Senador Canedo and Apuí
Specialized ophthalmological services are being expanded in various Brazilian regions through federal initiatives and parliamentary amendments.
In Senador Canedo, the Ministry of Health has deployed a mobile ophthalmological unit equipped with a surgical center. As part of the ‘Agora Tem Especialistas’ program, the unit will remain in the city for 45 days to provide consultations, exams, and cataract surgeries. The initiative aims to reduce the backlog of demand within the Unified Health System (SUS), with expectations to perform over 4,000 procedures, including approximately 80 surgeries per day.
In the municipality of Apuí, Amazonas, a medical drive has facilitated 400 ophthalmological surgeries, including cataract removals with intraocular lens implants and pterygium removals. This initiative was funded by a R$ 3 million amendment from Senator Plínio Valério intended to support medium and high-complexity health services. The program aims to provide specialized care locally, reducing the need for residents to travel long distances to Manaus for treatment.
