Brazil public health policy and service developments

Public health initiatives in Brazil continue to focus on policy development, infrastructure improvements, and specialized care. In Brasília, the Health Minister received the ‘Carta de Brasília’ from the Grupo da Terra, a document proposing to strengthen the National Integral Health Policy for Populations of the Countryside, Forest, and Waters (PNSIPCFA) to improve Unified Health System (SUS) access for rural and forest territories.

Simultaneously, regional efforts are addressing specific patient needs, such as a mobilization in Maranhão to provide essential civil documentation to psychiatric patients to facilitate access to social benefits.

At the municipal level, health services are pursuing new certifications and equipment upgrades. The M’Boi Mirim Municipal Hospital in São Paulo has become the first public unit in Brazil to reach level 2 of the international Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative, utilizing the 4Ms methodology—What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility—to specialize in elderly care.

Other regional developments include ONA Level 1 accreditation for the UPA Santa Lúcia in Maceió, the delivery of medical equipment to six basic health units in Palmeira dos Índios, and the provision of 120 new reclining chairs to the General Hospital in Parauapebas. Additionally, a mental health partnership in Teresina has reached a one-year milestone, while a structural failure occurred during construction at the Vista Alegre health unit in Potim, resulting in no reported injuries.
