Brazil expects over 35,000 new lung cancer cases

Brazil is expected to record approximately 35,380 new cases of lung cancer, with 1,590 of those cases projected in the state of Bahia, according to estimates from the National Cancer Institute (Inca).

During the ‘Agosto Branco’ awareness campaign, health specialists are highlighting that while smoking remains the primary risk factor for 80% to 85% of cases, non-smokers are also at risk. Experts warn that the misconception that only smokers develop the disease can delay medical consultation. Additionally, the use of electronic cigarettes (vapes) is noted as a concern due to the inhalation of ultrafine particles, heavy metals, and chemical solvents that can cause lung inflammation and cellular changes.

Early detection is critical for improving survival rates. For high-risk groups—including active smokers, passive smokers, and former smokers over age 50—low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can detect initial lesions. When caught in early stages, the chance of cure can exceed 90%. Common warning signs include persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, hoarseness, and coughing up blood.
