Brazil extends Desenrola Brasil debt renegotiation deadline to August 31

A record 83.7 million Brazilians were listed with negative credit in June, the highest in the country’s history, and 81.6 % of households reported having debts due. In response, the federal government prolonged the Desenrola Brasil 2.0 consumer‑debt renegotiation program until 31 August 2026, keeping the same terms and without allocating additional public funds. The extension aims to give borrowers who have already begun talks with banks more time to finalize agreements.

So far, about 110 000 operations have used up to 20 % of the workers’ FGTS balances, amounting to roughly R$ 62 million, while the programme has recorded over 89 000 debt‑settlement contracts, half of which involve credit‑card arrears. Discounts of up to 90 % are offered, and the initiative also supports drivers, taxi‑operators and other gig‑economy workers seeking vehicle financing.

Separately, the National Council of Justice issued guidance allowing courts to extinguish very old tax‑execution cases that have been stalled for more than 15 years and show no realistic prospect of recovery, though private‑sector debts remain unaffected. The combined measures affect millions of consumers and aim to reduce the pressure on Brazil’s credit market.
