Brazil Extends Desenrola Brasil Debt‑Renegotiation Program
The Brazilian federal government announced that the deadline for joining the Desenrola Brasil 2.0 debt‑renegotiation scheme has been extended to 31 August. The program, overseen by Finance Minister Dario Durigan, allows borrowers with credit‑card, overdraft or personal‑loan debts incurred up to 31 January 2026 and overdue between 91 days and two years to obtain discounts of up to 90 percent, interest as low as 1.99 % per month and repayment terms of up to 48 months. By 23 July the scheme had already renegotiated roughly R$ 22 billion in debts for about 3.6 million operations, reducing the outstanding balance to around R$ 4 billion, with the goal of assisting 10 million families.
Separately, Brazilian courts clarified that a driver’s licence (CNH) or passport can only be seized in debt cases after a specific judicial order, not automatically because of a negative credit record. The Supreme Federal Court affirmed that such measures are permissible under article 139, IV of the Civil Procedure Code, but must be applied individually and as a last resort when other collection methods have failed. A negative entry in credit‑bureau databases such as SPC or Serasa does not, by itself, trigger the loss of these documents.
