Brazil extends Desenrola Rural debt‑relief deadline to Dec 20 for small farmers

The federal Desenrola Rural program, aimed at small‑holder producers, lets agriculture credit contracts signed between 2012 and 2022 be renegotiated with discounts of up to 96 % on interest and penalties. Eligible loans include Pronaf and constitutional funds (FCO, FNO, FNE) and can be repaid over ten years. The deadline to apply for the renegotiation was moved to 20 December to help farmers face high production costs and climate‑related pressures, while the sector’s default rate has risen above 8 %.

Producers must present personal identification, property registration, the original rural credit deed and an up‑to‑date debt statement at the bank and explicitly request the federal terms. Experts warn that many banks offer “generic” restructuring packages that lack the program’s benefits, so borrowers are urged to compare offers and, if necessary, seek judicial enforcement of their rights. The scheme does not cover medium‑ or large‑scale producers, who must rely on other credit‑restructuring mechanisms.
