Brazil faces pressure to meet 2030 land restoration goals
Following the 17th United Nations Conference to Combat Desertification (COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the Brazilian government faces calls to fulfill its commitment to restore 163,000 square kilometers of degraded land by 2030. While the goal has received praise from the United Nations and civil society organizations, experts emphasize the need for practical implementation.
Luiza Soares of WWF Global described the target as “ambitious,” noting that success requires an integrated approach involving ecosystem conservation, soil management, and the transformation of agricultural food systems. She also stressed the importance of including local populations whose livelihoods and food security depend on these lands.
Pedro Sena of the Rede para Restauração da Caatinga (ReCaa) urged civil society to monitor progress annually to ensure soil conservation commitments are met. Additionally, Rafael Giovanelli from Instituto Escolhas noted that the announcement comes after an 11-year delay and called for strengthened administrative and budgetary structures, including the regulation of the Caatinga Vegetation Recovery Law.
