Brazil faces rising debt interest and high household delinquency
Brazil is experiencing significant fiscal and personal financial strain as of mid-2026. Official Central Bank data shows that public sector interest payments reached R$ 1.182 trillion in the twelve months ending August 2026, accounting for 8.86% of the country's GDP. This figure represents a substantial increase from R$ 575 billion (5.8% of GDP) in August 2022, indicating an inertial rise in debt servicing costs.
Economist Solange Srour of UBS Global Wealth Management suggests that stabilizing the public debt would require a fiscal consolidation of approximately 3.5% of GDP. This estimate accounts for a structural primary deficit of roughly 1.5% of GDP and the need for a primary surplus near 2% of GDP to halt the upward debt trajectory. As of August 2026, the gross government debt stood at 82.9% of GDP.
On the household level, Serasa data reveals that by July 2026, 83.9 million Brazilians were in default, with 348.3 million outstanding debts totaling R$ 586.4 billion. Additionally, a survey by Serasa and the Opinion Box Institute found that 50% of Brazilians spent more than they had planned during the first half of 2026.
