Brazil faces rising gynecological cancer projections

Projections from the National Cancer Institute (INCA) indicate that the Southeast region of Brazil could see more than 15,000 new cases of gynecological cancers annually between 2026 and 2028. This represents an 11.5% increase compared to the projected 13,830 annual cases for the 2023–2025 period.

To address these trends, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has launched an initiative to collect best practices regarding cervical cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and follow-up. The program invites municipal and state health secretariats, as well as SUS units, to submit successful experiences in managing the disease. Selected initiatives may be presented at a national seminar in Brasília in December 2026.

Health experts emphasize the importance of different prevention strategies: HPV vaccination and screening for cervical cancer, and monitoring symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain for ovarian and endometrial cancers.
