Brazil faces rising violence and insecurity in schools
Reports from Brazilian educational institutions highlight a growing crisis of violence and insecurity within schools. In Curitiba, a pedagogue at Eunice Borges da Rocha State College was physically assaulted by a 17-year-old student, resulting in facial injuries and significant psychological trauma for the educator.
This incident reflects a broader national trend. According to OECD research, 47% of Brazilian teachers report stress caused by intimidation and verbal abuse, a figure significantly higher than the 18% average across 55 surveyed countries.
In other regions, such as Morada Verde, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of structural and human resources in new school buildings. Families have reported frequent conflicts, student injuries, and a general sense of insecurity, suggesting that physical infrastructure alone is insufficient to ensure safety without adequate staff, trained inspectors, and effective conflict management protocols.
