Brazil faces surge in wildfires amid extreme weather
Brazil is experiencing a significant surge in fire activity driven by extreme weather and drought conditions. Data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) showed 20,222 fire outbreaks in August 2026, a 9.6% increase compared to the previous year.
More recent reports indicate a sharp escalation, with nearly 40,000 active heat spots identified across the country within a 48-hour period, representing a 48.64% increase over the preceding 24 hours. The North region accounts for the highest concentration at 46.8%, followed by the Northeast at 36.87%. Specific municipalities in the Legal Amazon, such as São Félix do Xingu, Lábrea, and Novo Aripuanã, are among the hardest hit.
In response to these growing risks, the 16th Fire Show and 25th Fisp international fairs will be held in São Paulo this October. Industry leaders from the Brazilian Association of Firefighting Equipment and High-Pressure Cylinders (ABIEX) note that phenomena like El Niño are increasing demand for forest firefighting systems, industrial brigades, and critical infrastructure containment technologies.
