Federal Police find no evidence of crime by journalist investigating Flávio Dino

The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) issued a report to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) stating there is no evidence that journalist Luís Pablo committed the crime of violation of functional secrecy. The investigation, initiated following a search and seizure operation authorized by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, sought to determine if Pablo’s reports regarding the alleged irregular use of official vehicles by Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino and his family were obtained illegally or were part of a paid campaign.

Investigators found that while a R$ 100,000 transfer was made to the journalist via a third party, they could not establish a definitive link between this sum and the publication of the news reports. The PF also noted that Pablo’s activities are theoretically protected by the constitutional right to freedom of the press. The report identified Raimundo Cutrim, a former state secretary, as the source who provided the restricted information.

Separately, the case has sparked intense political and legal debate. Justice Flávio Dino has advocated for the mandatory requirement of a journalism diploma to regulate the profession and address concerns regarding the misuse of source confidentiality by non-professionals. Meanwhile, other investigations involving Gilbson Cutrim, a convicted murderer, have raised allegations of corruption and bribery involving the administration of Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão.
