Brazil Fies program moves toward tax data access and debt renegotiation
The Brazilian Education and Culture Commission has approved a bill that would allow the public bank operating the Student Financing Fund (Fies) to consult the tax and asset data of students with overdue debts. The proposal, authored by Senator Alessandro Vieira, aims to help the operator assess students' ability to pay and establish more appropriate collection and renegotiation methods.
If passed, the measure would allow the Fies operating agent to request specific information with clear justification. Proponents suggest this could increase resources available for new students by improving debt recovery through extrajudicial means.
Separately, the Desenrola Fies 2026 program is offering debt renegotiation opportunities until September 16. This initiative is available to students with contracts signed until 2017 who were in the amortization phase as of May 4, 2026. Renegotiations must be conducted directly through Banco do Brasil or Caixa via their digital channels. The program covers both compliant and delinquent contracts, including those with names registered in credit default databases.
