Brazil challenges US tariffs at WTO over alleged WTO violations
The United States imposed a 25% tariff on a range of Brazilian products and later added a 12.5% surcharge, raising total duties to 37.5% on some exports. Brazil’s government says the measures were applied under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 and are inconsistent with the WTO General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (1994), arguing that they discriminate against Brazil compared with other WTO members. On 27 July Brazil submitted a formal request for WTO consultations and plans to resume bilateral talks with the United States from August to seek a reduction of the tariffs and new exemptions. The Confederation of National Services estimates the tariffs could affect about US$15 billion in Brazilian exports and cut GDP by 0.10‑0.26 %.
