Brazil basic food basket prices fall in 25 capitals

The cost of the basic food basket fell in 25 of the 27 Brazilian capitals surveyed in August 2026, according to data from Dieese and Conab. The most significant price reductions were recorded in Rio Branco (-4.68%), Manaus (-4.55%), and Boa Vista (-4.47%).

Price drops were largely driven by lower costs for potatoes, ground coffee, tomatoes, and beans. Conversely, items such as French bread, soybean oil, whole milk, and rice saw price increases in most cities. While monthly prices declined in most regions, the annual comparison shows that food costs remain higher in 25 capitals compared to August 2025, with only Brasília and Palmas showing year-over-year decreases.

São Paulo continues to have the most expensive basic basket in the country at R$ 900.59. In contrast, the most affordable baskets were found in the Northeast region, with Aracaju recording the lowest average cost at R$ 570.98. Dieese estimates that a minimum wage of R$ 7,565.86 would be required to cover basic family needs based on the highest costs recorded.
