Food inflation and cost-of-living responses in Brazil and PT
Overview
Rising food prices continue to impact consumer purchasing power in Brazil and Portugal, requiring strategic household planning to maintain nutritional quality. In Brazil, recent surveys indicate rising costs for basic staples. In Jaraguá do Sul, Procon reported that while refined sugar and rice remain competitive, the fruit and vegetable sector is driving costs upward, specifically with tomatoes and green peppers. In Varginha, a study by IFSULDEMINAS and Grupo Unis found the basic food basket rose by 5.59% in early September compared to August, ending a two-month decline. Driven by prices for tomatoes, potatoes, rice, and soybean oil, the basket reached R$ 751.23, representing 50.10% of the net minimum wage. Researchers noted these increases threaten food security, as the basket cost is 3.45 times higher than the monthly per capita income threshold for extreme poverty. New data from Dieese and Conab indicates a shift in August, where the cost of the basic food basket decreased in 25 of the 27 Brazilian capitals. Significant price drops occurred in Rio Branco (-4.68%), Manaus (-4.55%), Boa Vista (-4.47%), Aracaju (-3.89%), and Cuiabá (-3.37%), driven largely by lower prices for potatoes, coffee, tomatoes, and beans. However, annual comparisons show costs have risen in 25 capitals compared to the previous year. São Paulo remains the most expensive city for staples at R$ 900.59, while Aracaju recorded one of the lowest averages at R$ 570.98. Dieese estimates a family would need R$ 7,565.86 to cover basic food expenses, approximately 4.67 times the current minimum wage. In Portugal, DECO Proteste data shows the essential 63-item food basket increased by 2.11 euros over the last week to reach 254.73 euros. This follows a previous weekly decrease. Significant recent price hikes include spiral pasta (up 22%), spaghetti (up 21%), and crustless sliced bread (up 14%).
