Brazil heatwave: Inmet issues red alert as temperatures exceed 40°C
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a red alert for an intense heatwave across several regions of Brazil, starting Saturday, September 26, and lasting until Wednesday, September 30. The alert characterizes a situation of great danger, defined by temperatures remaining at least 5°C above historical averages for at least five consecutive days.
Eight states are expected to see temperatures exceeding 40°C. Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, and Paraná are entirely covered by the alert. Partial coverage includes southern Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Mato Grosso. Other states, including Tocantins, the Distrito Federal, Bahia, and Espírito Santo, will also face high temperatures, though they may not meet the technical criteria for a sustained heatwave.
In the northwest of São Paulo, temperatures could reach 40°C, accompanied by critically low humidity levels, potentially dropping below 30% or even 20% in some areas. In the Pantanal region, cities like Corumbá and Porto Murtinho are expected to see extreme heat. In Mato Grosso, Cuiabá may reach 41°C on Sunday and Monday. A cold front is expected to arrive in the south of the country on Wednesday, which may begin to lower temperatures in those regions.
