Brazil highlights fishing and aquaculture potential at Seafood Show
At the opening of the 5th Seafood Show Latin America in São Paulo, Brazil's Minister of Fishing and Aquaculture, Edipo Araujo, emphasized the sector's potential to expand food supplies, generate employment, and strengthen the country's international market presence. The minister advocated for collaboration between the public sector, private industry, and academia to drive sustainable development within the productive chain.
Global trends support this strategic focus. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), world production of fishing and aquaculture reached 223.2 million tonnes in 2022. Notably, aquaculture surpassed extractive fishing for the first time, accounting for 51% of the total production.
In a regional context, the 3rd Regional Meeting of Fishermen of the Araruama Lagoon was held in São Pedro da Aldeia. Organized by Prolagos, the event focused on valuing artisanal fishing and preserving traditional knowledge, addressing the economic and cultural importance of the lagoon to local communities.
