Brazil bans foie gras production and sales nationwide
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed law 15.475/2026, which prohibits the production, import, export and commercialisation of any food obtained through forced‑feeding of animals, chiefly foie gras. The legislation takes effect 180 days after its publication in the official gazette and imposes detention of three months to one year plus fines for violations. Brazil thus becomes the first Latin American nation – and the second worldwide after India – to ban both production and sale of foie gras, joining about 18 other countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Argentina that have already prohibited the practice. Deputy Fred Costa acted as rapporteur in the Chamber of Deputies, steering the bill through the Constitution and Justice Committee and securing unanimous congressional approval despite diplomatic pressure from France. The ban is presented as a measure to protect animal welfare and will affect high‑end gastronomy and any imports of the French delicacy.
