Brazil honors Maria da Penha as law marks 20 years

During the II State Conference of Women Lawyers in Ceará, activist Maria da Penha and Socorro França were honored to mark the 20th anniversary of the Maria da Penha Law. The legislation is considered a primary milestone in combating violence against women in Brazil. During the ceremony, Maria da Penha emphasized that the law must be continuously worked on and improved through the efforts of the legal profession.

In Salvador, Bahia, the Patrulha Guardiã Maria da Penha has reported significant results in protecting victims of violence. Between 2025 and 2026, the patrol, which is linked to the Municipal Civil Guard, conducted over 800 services for women. The specialized team of 16 agents focuses on rapid response to situations such as sexual harassment in public spaces and violations of protective orders. The city also utilizes the ‘Botão Lilás’ service via WhatsApp to facilitate emergency assistance.
