Frei Orlando Honored as Brazilian Hero of the Fatherland
An extra edition of the Diário Oficial da União published on Tuesday (day 4) enacted Law 15.483, inscribing the name of Frei Orlando in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland. The honor recognises his service as a captain chaplain of the Brazilian Army during World War II. Born Antônio Álvares da Silva in Morada Nova, Minas Gerais, in 1913, he studied in Divinópolis, completed formation in the Netherlands, was ordained a priest, taught at Colégio Santo Antônio in São João Del‑Rei and adopted the religious name Frei Orlando. He aided social projects such as the Soup of the Poor together with the 11th Infantry Regiment. After joining the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, he served in Italy and died on 24 April 1945, a few days before the Capture of Monte Castelo, killed by an accidental shot from an Italian partisan. The commemoration stems from PL 1.076/2023 introduced by former deputy Paulo Fernando (DF) and reported in the Senate by Senator Flávio Arns (PSB‑PR). The Book, kept in the Pantheon of the Fatherland and Freedom Tancredo Neves at Brasília’s Praça dos Três Poderes, now bears his name.
