Overview

In early July 2026 the Brazilian Senate approved the inscription of former army chaplain Frei Orlando in the national Book of Heroes and Heroines. The following month the Diário Oficial da União released an extra edition (5 August 2026) enacting Law 15.483, formally recording his name and detailing his World War II service with the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in Italy. The law, stemming from PL 1.076/2023 proposed by former deputy Paulo Fernando and reported by Senator Flávio Arns, recognises Orlando’s sacrifice—he died on 24 April 1945 from an accidental shot by an Italian partisan, shortly before the Capture of Monte Castelo. Born Antônio Álvares da Silva in Minas Gerais (1913), he studied in Divinópolis and the Netherlands, taught at Colégio Santo Antônio, and helped social projects such as the Soup of the Poor with the 11th Infantry Regiment. His name now appears in the Book kept in the Pantheon of the Fatherland and Freedom Tancredo Neves at Brasília’s Praça dos Três Poderes.
