Brazil hosts climate and social justice initiatives

Various educational and research initiatives in Brazil are focusing on the intersection of climate change, social justice, and public data.

The Iyaleta Research Association is hosting the 5th edition of the Spring Iyaleta Program, titled “Municipalization of Data: For Equitable Climate Adaptation in the Global South.” Running from September 22 to 25 in a hybrid format, the event aims to connect public health, oceanography, and reproductive justice with climate adaptation. Organizers emphasize the need to move beyond carbon sequestration metrics to address how environmental racism and data asymmetries impact vulnerable populations in urban settings.

Simultaneously, the University of São Paulo (USP), in partnership with the organization Ecofalante, is hosting the 9th USP Ecofalante Showcase. The program offers 90 free activities, including film screenings, debates, and webinars across six university campuses. The exhibition covers themes such as ancestral knowledge, the climate crisis, gender, and socio-environmental justice, aligning with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and Brazil’s ODS 18 initiative for ethnic-racial equality.
