Sustainability and social justice research in Brazil

Overview

Academic and research initiatives in Brazil are increasingly focusing on sustainability, climate adaptation, and social justice.

In mid-September 2026, the Iyaleta Research Association announced the 5th Spring Iyaleta Program, titled “Municipalization of Data: For Equitable Climate Adaptation in the Global South.” The program seeks to integrate public health, oceanography, and reproductive justice to address environmental racism and data asymmetries. Concurrently, the University of São Paulo and Ecofalante launched the 9th USP Ecofalante Showcase, featuring activities centered on ancestral knowledge, gender, and socio-environmental justice.

Further research from Brazilian institutions has explored practical applications of sustainable technology and corporate governance. This includes the successful retrofit of a solar power generation system at the Faculdade de Tecnologia Prefeito Hirant Sanazar and studies regarding the feasibility of implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within small and medium-sized enterprises in São Paulo.
