Brazil economic activity declines in July amid agricultural and industrial slowdown

Brazil's economic activity showed signs of deceleration in July 2026, according to recent indicators. The Central Bank's Economic Activity Index (IBC-Br) fell by 0.2% compared to June, marking the second consecutive monthly decline. This contraction was primarily driven by a 1.2% drop in the agricultural sector, while industry fell by 0.4% and services remained stable.

Simultaneously, the FGV's GDP Monitor estimated a 0.4% contraction in the economy for the same period. Economists note that while monthly figures are negative, the annual comparison remains positive, with the IBC-Br up 1.1% and the FGV estimate showing a 1.3% increase compared to July 2025.

Several factors are contributing to this slowdown. Domestically, high interest rates and rising household debt are limiting consumption. Internationally, the economy faces challenges from increased US tariffs on Brazilian exports and volatile oil prices linked to conflicts in the Middle East. The agricultural sector is also facing specific pressures from high debt levels and credit difficulties, according to the Frente Parlamentar da Agropecuária.
