Brazil implements new National Identity Card (CIN) rollout
Brazil is transitioning to the Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), a new identity document that uses the CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) as a unique identification number to replace the old RG system. While the first issuance is free nationwide, the process is not entirely digital.
Citizens can use mobile devices or government portals to schedule appointments and consult service locations in various states, including São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia, and Pará. However, physical attendance at an identification unit remains mandatory for document verification, photography, and biometric data collection.
In certain regions, the completed physical document may be delivered via the Correios postal service, though this is not a universal rule. Once issued, a digital version of the CIN is accessible through the Gov.br application. The previous RG format remains valid until February 28, 2032.
