Brazil's Receita Federal issues first alphanumeric CNPJ and starts IBS/CBS invoicing
On 31 July 2026 the Receita Federal generated the first alphanumeric CNPJ, assigned to a Banco do Brasil S.A. branch (00.000.000/E08G-12). The new identifier mixes letters and numbers, keeps the 14‑character length and applies only to new registrations; existing CNPJs remain unchanged.
From 3 August 2026 the tax reform requires companies to add fields for the Imposto sobre Bens e Serviços (IBS) and the Contribuição sobre Bens e Serviços (CBS) in electronic invoices such as NF‑e, NFC‑e, CT‑e, MDF‑e and others. The transition uses test rates of 0.1 % for IBS and 0.9 % for CBS (total 1 %). The rollout is staged, reaching all document types by 1 January 2027.
The change obliges businesses, public agencies, banks and software providers to update ERP, billing and validation systems to store, validate and process the alphanumeric CNPJ and the new IBS/CBS fields. The Receita Federal warned that outdated systems could cause registration failures, document rejections or integration problems. A temporary interruption of the national CNPJ database was scheduled for 23–30 July 2026. The reform also sets a minimum IBS rate for states and municipalities from 2029 to 2077 to preserve constitutional revenue retentions.
