Brazil income tax rules for minimum wage earners

While individuals earning only the minimum wage in Brazil are generally not required to file an income tax return due to falling below the annual income threshold, several specific conditions can trigger the obligation to declare.

Mandatory filing may be required if a taxpayer meets any of the following criteria: possessing assets (such as real estate or vehicles) with a total acquisition value exceeding a specific limit (set at R$ 800,000 for the 2025 cycle); receiving exempt income—such as inheritances, donations, or FGTS withdrawals—that exceeds R$ 200,000; engaging in stock market activities, including selling shares even at a loss; or earning income from rural activities above the established annual limit.
