Bolsa Família benefits increased by 15% in Brazil

The Brazilian government has announced a 15.04% adjustment to the Bolsa Família social welfare program, effective from the October 2026 payment cycle. This increase, based on the accumulated INPC inflation index, raises the minimum monthly benefit per family from R$ 600 to R$ 691. The average benefit is expected to rise from approximately R$ 675 to R$ 777, depending on family composition.

Specific components of the program have also been updated. The Citizenship Income Benefit (Benefício de Renda de Cidadania) has increased to R$ 164 per person, and the Early Childhood Benefit (Benefício Primeira Infância) for children aged 0 to 6 has risen to R$ 173 per child. Payments are scheduled to be released between October 19 and October 30, 2026, according to the final digit of the beneficiary's NIS.

The announcement comes amid a presidential election cycle, drawing criticism from political opponents regarding its timing and fiscal impact. Economic reports suggest the adjustment will cost R$ 5.8 billion in 2026 and R$ 22 billion in 2027. While the government maintains the measure is necessary to restore purchasing power, fiscal analysts note the increase was not included in the original budget proposal and may impact the projected primary deficit.
