Brazil increases mandatory ethanol blend in gasoline to 32%
Brazil has implemented a temporary increase in the mandatory percentage of anhydrous ethanol in gasoline. Following approval by the National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE), the blend for common and additive gasoline rose from 30% to 32%, creating the E32 mixture. This policy aims to reduce petroleum dependency and lower emissions, with the 2024 Fuel of the Future Law allowing for a potential increase up to 35% if technical viability is proven.
Technical tests conducted by the Mauá Institute of Technology have confirmed the viability of E32 for light vehicles and motorcycles, noting that while ethanol may slightly reduce fuel autonomy, its higher octane rating can improve combustion resistance in properly calibrated engines.
In a separate regulatory matter, the Public Ministry of Alagoas has opened a civil inquiry into Auto Posto Espírito Santo Ltda. in Arapiraca. The investigation follows a report from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) showing that a gasoline sample collected in May 2024 contained 30% ethanol, exceeding the legal limit of 26% to 28% required at that time. The station was previously fined R$ 20,000, but the debt remains unpaid.
